Sainsbury’s has begun testing a new ‘Scan & Go’ smartphone app that allows customers to scan items as they shop rather than at the till. The grocer has expanded the trial from the original three Sainsbury’s Local stores to include larger stores such as its hypermarket in Colney near St Albans. In 2018, Sainsbury’s widely introduced SmartShop, a “new technology which gives shoppers the option to grab their groceries and skip the checkout completely”.Customers can now use the Smartshop app or handsets to scan as they go, then purchase at a dedicated Smartshop checkout. The experiment will put SmartShop Scan, Pay & Go technology to the test in a bespoke food-to-go store, making grocery shopping quicker and more convenient. I’ve been a long- time Sainsbury’s customer but am disappointedly really not impressed with the app and probably won’t risk using it again because of the time and fiddly trouble it took. I find the Tesco version with a handheld ‘point and scan’ unit (with its own trolley slot) very much easier and quicker to use. There are often queues for these machines even at times when you’d expect it to be quiet. The developer will be required to provide privacy details when they submit their next app update.
